Syllabus: Why Do People Harm Others—and What Can Reduce It?

Use Figure 1 to trace how a provocation could produce either retaliation or restraint. Treat each arrow as a claim requiring evidence.

Why you’re reading it. Build a vocabulary for comparing mechanisms without reducing aggression to one trait or emotion.

A question to consider. Someone interprets a delayed reply as deliberate disrespect. What two pathways could connect that interpretation to a harmful response, and how would you distinguish them?

Why this reading

Aggressive conduct can involve interpretations, emotions, learned expectations, goals, and opportunities. This framework organizes those possibilities and connects an immediate encounter with the experience a person brings to the next one.

Before you read

Proximate processes concern an episode; distal processes concern development over time. Appraisal means interpreting an event. A script is a learned expectation about how a situation unfolds. The diagram proposes relationships to investigate, rather than demonstrating every arrow.

Read for

  1. Trace one episode through inputs, internal states, appraisal, action, and feedback in Figure 1.
  2. Notice that deliberation can support aggression as well as restraint.
  3. Ask which observations would distinguish the proposed pathways from competing explanations.

Consider afterwards

  1. What would a researcher need to measure to distinguish an interpretation pathway from an arousal pathway?
  2. When does a broad framework become too flexible to make a risky prediction?

Editorial context

This is an influential integrative account, not a settled explanation of every form of violence. Ferguson and Dyck challenge its assumptions and evidential basis. A 2024 daily-life study examines several predictions but remains correlational and finds an interaction contrary to its expectation. Assess specific claims separately.
