Reading focus
Syllabus: How Can Working With Emotion, Awareness and Acceptance Promote Change?
Compare proposed mediators and outcomes in both treatments, including their shared exposure component.
Why you’re reading it. Test the claim that a process belongs uniquely to one therapeutic approach.
A question to consider. What design would distinguish a common change process from two self-report measures tracking general improvement?
Why this reading
Therapies may emphasize different processes without producing entirely distinct patterns of change. Repeated measurements in this trial make that possibility concrete and extend the outcome question beyond anxiety symptoms.
Before you read
Anxiety sensitivity is fear of anxiety-related sensations. A mediator is a variable proposed to account for change; a temporal association strengthens some explanations but does not by itself establish causation.
Read for
- Compare changes in anxiety sensitivity and defusion across both treatments.
- Distinguish anxiety, avoidance and quality of life, including which process predicts which outcome.
Consider afterwards
- If defusion changes in both therapies, what does that imply about specificity?
- What third process could explain changes in both the mediator and the outcome?
Editorial context
The 67-person analysis uses self-report process measures rather than random assignment to a psychological mechanism. Both treatments included exposure, and the selected measures do not represent every aspect of either model. Similar mediation patterns need not mean that the treatments or their processes are identical.
