Syllabus: Where Do Individual Differences Come From?
Separate the size of genetic and environmental components from their continuity and contribution to stable personality differences.
Why you’re reading it. Extend the previous personality-stability question from describing persistence to examining modeled sources of that persistence.
A question to consider. If the siblings’ relative persistence remains similar over several years, what family and longitudinal comparisons would help investigate its sources beyond measuring the same trait twice?
Why this reading
Explaining variation at one age is different from explaining why relative differences persist. This synthesis extends genetic and environmental models across time, allowing readers to distinguish the size of a component from its continuity and its contribution to personality stability.
Before you read
Rank-order stability concerns people’s relative positions. A longitudinal genetic correlation concerns overlap in modeled genetic influences across occasions; it does not directly measure gene expression. A component contributes to observed stability through both its magnitude and its continuity. Environmental estimates can contain measurement error, making reliability consequential.
Read for
- Keep heritability at one occasion, genetic continuity across occasions, and genetic contribution to observed stability distinct.
- Examine how the analysis handles age, measurement error, and different sources of personality ratings.
- Separate the estimated developmental patterns from the proposed experiences or mechanisms that might produce them.
Consider afterwards
- Personality rankings become more stable with age while the estimated genetic contribution to that stability remains similar. What could an increasing environmental contribution mean, and what observations would identify the experiences involved?
Editorial context
The age patterns combine studies rather than tracking one cohort throughout life. Measurement and rater differences complicate developmental interpretation; the authors examine these through sensitivity analyses. Modeled genetic and environmental components do not identify particular genes or experiences. Treat the paper’s candidate-gene examples and proposed mechanisms as historical context, not mechanisms established by this meta-analysis. The later Bleidorn and colleagues synthesis updates observed personality stability and change; it asks a different question from decomposing their sources.
