Syllabus: How Do Attitudes Form and Change?

Bring the earlier distinctions to the recruitment, comparisons, repeated outcomes, and proposed mechanism.

Why you’re reading it. Evaluate durable change outside the laboratory without treating an intervention package as proof of one process.

A question to consider. Which findings support persistence, which address resistance, and which additional evidence would be needed for a claim about behavior?

Why this reading

A change measured immediately after a conversation may not endure. This field experiment follows evaluations over time and after exposure to opposing messages.

Before you read

A placebo comparison receives a different conversation. Random assignment, actually receiving contact, and completing follow-up surveys are distinct stages. Confidence intervals describe uncertainty in an estimated effect.

Read for

  1. Trace recruitment, household assignment, contact, and follow-up.
  2. Compare the attitude and policy-support measures, their wording, and the time points.
  3. Separate the conversation's overall effect from evidence identifying its active ingredient.

Consider afterwards

  1. What additional outcome would be needed before concluding that a durable improvement in reported attitudes reduced discriminatory behavior?

Editorial context

The study concerns contacted South Florida voters and survey outcomes through three months. It does not isolate perspective-taking or establish lasting change in every setting. Later work by the same authors separates narrative components; it is not an independent replication. The retracted LaCour–Green paper discussed here is a different study.
