Syllabus: How Do Cultural Worlds Shape Selves and Relationships?
Use the separation of agency and interpersonal distance to reconsider apparent conflicts between autonomy and belonging.
Why you’re reading it. Refine the opening framework before interpreting cultural comparisons.
A question to consider. Someone freely chooses to care for an older relative. What additional evidence would distinguish autonomy, closeness and external control in that decision?
Why this reading
Kagitcibasi separates acting with a sense of agency from being distant from other people. This conceptual distinction makes room for an autonomous self that also sustains close relationships.
Before you read
Autonomy concerns agency; relatedness concerns interpersonal connection. Independence is sometimes used for both, which can obscure the argument. A conceptual distinction does not by itself establish that measured dimensions are statistically independent.
Read for
- Follow how separating agency from interpersonal distance changes the proposed models of self and family.
- Examine the evidence used to connect social and economic change with family relationships.
Consider afterwards
- What would show that a family obligation was willingly endorsed rather than imposed?
- Which findings could challenge the proposed model of an autonomous and related self?
Editorial context
This theoretical synthesis draws substantially on Turkish family research and selected comparative evidence. Its developmental and evaluative claims require scrutiny beyond those settings. Material dependence, emotional connection and control can change differently; the model should not become a ranking of families or a universal account of modernization.
