Syllabus: How Can Working With Emotion, Awareness and Acceptance Promote Change?
Compare model discovery, sequence validation and the outcome each analysis actually predicts.
Why you’re reading it. Examine what observational process evidence adds to the conceptual account.
A question to consider. What result could support the proposed in-session sequence while leaving its effect on life outside therapy uncertain?
Why this reading
The study turns descriptions of emotional change into an explicit process model. Readers can examine how a model built from selected cases is tested against observations from other clients, and what this kind of validation leaves unresolved.
Before you read
Task analysis builds an account of how a therapeutic task unfolds. A coded emotional state is an observer’s classification; it is not direct access to a person’s experience.
Read for
- Distinguish the initial discovery cases from the validation sample.
- Follow how sequences accommodate returns and intervening states rather than requiring an uninterrupted staircase.
Consider afterwards
- What observation would count against the proposed order?
- How could a sequence predict an in-session event without explaining later recovery?
Editorial context
The validation concerns within-session processing, not final treatment outcomes or experimentally established causes. Selected clients and experiential settings constrain generalization. The title should not be read as a universal instruction to intensify distress or revisit painful experience.
