Syllabus: When Do Fear and Worry Become Persistent Problems?
Separate expectancy violation from expectancy change and from the outcome used to judge improvement.
Why you’re reading it. Evaluate a process study against the earlier framework without assuming that its title establishes a causal mechanism.
A question to consider. What additional manipulation or temporal evidence would strengthen the claim that revised expectations are responsible for improvement?
Why this reading
An event can contradict a prediction without changing what someone expects next time. Pittig and colleagues separate these possibilities using repeated exposure records. Their study connects a proposed learning mechanism with outcomes while making the limits of process evidence inspectable.
Before you read
Expectancy violation compares a predicted threat with its occurrence; expectancy change compares the original prediction with a revised one. The modeled learning rate describes how violation translates into revision. A process variable can predict improvement without having been experimentally assigned.
Read for
- Track the sample from the parent trial to participants with usable process and outcome data.
- Distinguish the randomized treatment schedule from the observational comparisons of learning indicators. Compare expectancy violation with expectancy change as predictors.
Consider afterwards
- What design would make a stronger case that changed expectations produce improvement, rather than reflecting improvement or another common influence?
Editorial context
The parent trial randomized treatment timing, not learning rate. Exposure records came from 651 patients; 605 had outcome data. Higher expectancy change and learning rate, but not violation alone, predicted better outcomes. The session-averaged associations do not establish fine-grained temporal mediation. Participants were treated in Germany for panic/agoraphobia, social anxiety, or multiple specific phobias; this is not direct evidence for every anxiety presentation.
