Syllabus: How Does Substance Use Become Persistent Despite Harm?
Follow the separation of wanting, liking and learning, and ask how sensitization would be detected.
Why you’re reading it. Give the broad biological argument a specific psychological mechanism and competing predictions.
A question to consider. If a cue increases pursuit without increasing reported pleasure, what additional evidence would distinguish sensitization from an ordinary learned expectation?
Why this reading
Why might a person strongly pursue something that brings little pleasure? Robinson and Berridge distinguish incentive motivation from enjoyment and argue that sensitization can amplify cue-triggered wanting. The review turns a familiar paradox into a mechanistic proposal with testable distinctions.
Before you read
Incentive salience is the motivational attraction attached to a reward or its cues. Sensitization means an enhanced response after repeated exposure; tolerance means a diminished response. The authors’ technical “wanting” is not identical to a conscious intention or a report of craving.
Read for
- Keep learning about a cue, attraction to it, pleasure and drug-seeking behavior separate. Which measures distinguish them?
- Examine how context affects the expression of sensitization and how the authors interpret apparently conflicting human dopamine findings.
- Compare evidence about movement, incentive motivation and persistent harmful use. Does support for one establish the others?
Consider afterwards
- Design a comparison that could distinguish stronger wanting from greater expected pleasure.
- What finding would favor a habit explanation over an incentive account, rather than merely fitting both?
Editorial context
This is the theory’s authors’ selective 2008 review, with substantial animal evidence and explicit discussion of translation. Their 2025 update extends the argument and its comparisons with competing accounts; it is not an independent adjudication. Sensitization, withdrawal, learning and social conditions can contribute together without the review establishing their relative importance for every person.
