Individual Differences

How do we describe, measure, and explain differences between people?

People differ in cognitive abilities, characteristic behavior, interests, motives, and many other attributes. The first task is to describe and measure that variation well. Only then can we ask what explains it, how it develops, and what it helps us predict.

Begin with How Do We Describe and Measure Individual Differences? Intelligence and personality provide two substantial examples of how observations become scores, dimensions, and models. The area also encompasses the nature of intelligence, approaches to personality, stability and change, genetic and environmental explanations, and the interpretation of predictive evidence. Each question calls for its own reading path; no single model or syllabus exhausts the field.

How Do We Describe and Measure Individual Differences?

Learn how researchers define and measure differences between people: how a personality questionnaire and an ability test are built, whether self and others agree, and when scores can be compared across groups.

Introductory · 9 core readings · 5 units · Prerequisites: No previous course in intelligence, personality, or psychometrics is required. Basic familiarity with averages and correlations is helpful; the guides introduce the necessary terms. Several methodological papers are demanding, and one tutorial includes statistical code. Follow their reasoning and examples; running the code or reproducing the calculations is not required.
